McConaughey shares awkward proposal story

Hard to believe that any woman would hesitate when presented the opportunity to become Matthew McConaughey's wife. But, that's just what happened when the Magic Mike star proposed to his longtime girlfriend Camila Alves over Christmas.
McConaughey shared his awkward proposal story with Jay Leno during a segment for The Tonight Show.
"I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep, so she would keep opening boxes to get to it. ... We finally got to her, and I'm calling my family over ... She gets to it, she opens it up, her eyes go wide, I take a knee. And, I ask her, 'Will you marry me and take my name?'" he shares.
But things did not quite go as planned -- at least initially. "The first words out of her mouth were not 'Yes.' No, it was not 'Yes.' I'm not gonna say what it was," he admits. "But, um, I did say, 'Look, I'm down on a knee, I'll stay here a while. I will outlast you!' And, I did. She conceded."
He also explained why they erected 40 tents on their property for the 3-day wedding celebration during the weekend of June 9. "This was her idea. She said, 'I want to build a village and I want all our friends and family to come here, stay for three full days, have an experience with us, so they can really remember this weekend."
Activities from the weekend included all-day drinking, sushi on the lawn, a barbecue and a crawfish boil. McConaughey and Alves have two children together: son Levi, 3, and daughter Vida, 2.
